Pretty new to dev (2 yoe). First role was 6 months due to COVID (business was very small and cut hours so I left), 1.1 yrs at next place, then joined tech startup 6 mos ago and now going pretty far in interviews at Color genomics after they reached out to me on linkedin.

Hard to decide if I’ll leave or not as I like my current role and company. But if I get to offer stage and offer is really good, would leaving make me look bad given all the brief stints on my resume?

TC: 140K
YOE: 2

If the new TC is good and you know you'll stay for at least 2yrs @Color, then go for it. Otherwise stop hopping, or remove the 6 month experience from your resume.

Yeah I am almost afraid they will give me a good offer because then I’ll feel like I have to take it and put myself in this position hah.

  • I'd be hesitant to hire you. Based on your resume I'd expect you to stick for 8-14mo and based on how I train people the first 6 mo absorbs about 1.5 hr of time from me per day. So I'd only be able to get 2-8mo of you really independently operating at peak performance. Which sucks.

Thanks for your insight here, really helpful. I go above and beyond at work and I always try to be valuable, I just don’t want that reputation ruined by chasing the bag you know? Will try to be tactful about it

    • You'll be fine then. Don't stress over a few years. If you have the right attitude you'll be in the right place long term 😉

This may be hard for a random person to answer but assuming I’d get to offer stage, what would be the minimum TC increase you’d take to jump ship if you were in my position?

    • You don’t have more than a couple of years experience. I’d look at:
      1- Career advancement
      2- TC

      TC shouldn’t be the priority.
      Maybe 20% increase or more.
