Stay with small/medium company (80-100 employees) full-time or take an internship at a big trading firm (500 employees)?

Hey guys, I'm 20 and in 3rd year of uni (stats/compsci). I currently have a full time job at a medium sized company with salary around $70000 AUD. I also have an internship offer I'm sitting on that is at a much bigger trading firm.

The internship will be 7 weeks paid on a equiv of 100k salary.

I'm not exactly sure what I want to do in the future specifically to be honest, it just has to be software engineering and pay well. Whatever niche if tech does not matter (eg med tech, FinTech).

Do you guys reckon I should quit the full time job for a full time internship or keep at my current role?

Thanks!

Step 1: Post both TCs and maybe even the smallest bit of context of what the new role is like & how it aligns with your career goals. Then we can start to think of advice.

    Step 2: ^

Apologies, I've updated the post. My current role is just a full stack dev. The intern role is about the same (same responsibilities I suppose). I can't actually tell for sure until I start

  • Trading firm for the prestige and plus it helps to see as many different (good) companies as possible while you are young. How can you know heaven without knowing hell?

plus you will diversify your network early on as many interns and FTEs will move over their career

i always went with maximizing firm size and so far never regretted it (of course, depending on opportunities)

    You are 20 years old.

Optimize for the best experience not for TC at this point. Don’t get comfortable otherwise you will become one of those fat lazy servants that don’t do anything and see stuck in your dead end job because you’re afraid. Run towards opportunity.

Aussies can move to the US easily due to E3 visa so get the better name and better expeirence and then flip to the US.

Best technology, best environment, best prestige. Are you furthering your knowledge and skills by joining this company or by staying with your current company?

What's the conversion likelihood (intern to full time) for the bigger firm? And does it represent a significant jump in pay post conversion?

Your industry's recognition of both names also matters. Not sure if you're a software dev or in another field.

How quickly is the other firm growing?

And more importantly, how quickly are you growing / learning in your current role?

While you're very early in your career, you can take a slight hit on compensation and optimize for growth and learning. That's assuming you're growing and learning in your current role, which only you can really know.

Research how much the difference in comp will be post conversion though, if it's 2x or something you can grow at the trading firm too.

Akuna? It's probably big enough that its growth does not matter to me (not even a grad). My current company? They're expanding and hiring a bunch of people and getting new clients in the oil and gas industry, but realistically I'll have to be in it for probably 5 more years for it to become significant.

It's just big enough where I don't get any stock either.

It is my first professional role though so I'm definitely learning a lot
