Which tech companies actually value UX Research?

Oct 1, 2021 8 Comments

I've worked at a couple of FAANGs, but have consistently seen the voice of UX researchers (who really do represent the voice of the user) drowned out or worse, treated as a parasite.

If you are a UXR, do you feel valued and do your insights actually guide product decisions (including those that suggest a product or feature should not be built)?

Honestly trying to get non UX people to consider UX is such a difficult to impossible task...even if you convince one manager or team member, the higher up one would be more dumb to be convinced...so much trouble that at times I feel that they should be given what they asked for to see what sh** they had visioned.

There is more weird stuff going in data science. Bad training data, models too complex etc. But guess it’s fine since they always have 99% accuracy.

The only 2 companies where I have seen positive UI changes are apple and Instagram.

I never had problems advocating for UX. I’ve worked in 4 startups and now a big >100.000 employee company. Instead of complaining, take it in your own hands!

    1. Do good work! Great data will show and people will listen
    2. Be proactive in advocating user centered design to leadership
    3. Show, don’t tell. Letting data speak is more effective than you telling someone else what to do
    4. Include stakeholders early in the process and get buy-in before you do the research
    5. Be proactive and meet with stakeholders and get to know their needs and problems. How might you be able to help?
    6. Research is not just research. Bad research is useless and a waste of everyone’s time. If you struggle really hard, maybe think about how you can improve yourself and get better? Ask for feedback or ask other UXR that are more experienced for help. I see this is especially the case with researchers who come from a design background with no real understanding of data and research rigor.
