I was in a group of parents most of whom working in tech. There was a discussion that it is a good time to buy FB stock. I mentioned I have value conflict with what FB does and don't believe capital gain from FB is clean money. They laughed together before they notice from my impression that I was serious.

I got so confused. It seems the only moral these days is what market wants. Is that what you see/feel?

Please share thoughts.

  • just make sure your morals is not a way for your ego to feel superior over others.

I mean people are not all ego or 0 ego. You might enjoy doing a right thing and be proud of it. Personally, I was sharing opinion.

    • ah, there it is, "the right thing". that's when you have an identity and you strongly identify with it, and you intelligence will do everything to protect your identity.

this thought experiment might help you in your life. can you see your eyes? have you ever seen your eyes, like really, not in reflection? the answer is a no. that's cause the observer and the object under observation can never be the same. this applies to everything, you can think about it when you have time.

the thoughts you're having, the morals etc, it's not you. it's just coming out of your mind which you can observe. once you're aware of this, your can keep your ego in control. good luck

I follow examples from the best leaderships on the planet.

If they care about money first, who am I to disagree?

Conflicting values are held by a lot of people. People will shit on Bezos for not doing enough to help the world and then go home and order something from Amazon. Or they say how horrible X company is for using labor in another country with horrible working conditions and then buy their product.

This is the most important separator of people IMO. People that decide their values before they take an action, and people that will flip their value system based on what benefits them in the moment.

You should watch below talk at Google series where the guest is basically roasting Google in front of Google employees.

Skip to 14 and he has something to say about the person who invited him to talk without reading his book.

Google initially decided not to publish the video but the guest leaked this info to journalists and they had to publish it

"don't be evil" is actually a very good standard for a corporation. low bar for humans, but good for corporations. Google clearly follows that. This comes from a person that worked in 3 different orgs in Google.

I do think Google is still better than its peers but I also think to sustain the growth it has been getting, it has to take stand which will clash with don't be evil philosophy and it's already happening.

There had been many reports of employee activitsim inside Google for number of issues.

As end user of Google product i can already see the business model of Google is changing slowly.

It made us believe that things can be free , so Gmail, Drive, YouTube, Android, Maps became our primary applications.

While these free products also killed the competition.

Now Google is aggressively trying to monetize whatever it can and it has started me to think of alternatives. Well it doesn't necessarily make them evil, but it's not the same company which we used know in its early days

Tbh nothing you do is gonna affect them so by you not investing and losing out on potential gains(assuming you think meta is gonna go up) is you throwing free money. By that logic, the stock market itself is shady, every time you buy a call or put, someone gets screwed over. If you try and avoid things that seem shady(and stuff that you personally can do nothing about) then you’ll realize that pretty soon, you’re having to boycott almost every business
