Microsoft vs Amazon. better?

Sep 30, 2018 29 Comments

My friend has new grad offers from both and he asked me for my opinion.
I told him msft after looking at people in similar situations. But I think I have been biased.

TC at msft will be better if he leverages Amazon offer, which he hasn't done yet.
Amazon tc can't be negotiated.

Objectively, on an average =>

Which one is considered more prestigious?
Which one looks better on your resume.
Which one is better for career?

PS :- I know it's highly dependent on the team; hence on an average.

    MS wins on WLB. Amazon for interesting work, on average. Comp often better at Amazon but not always. Both look good on resume, but when I see somebody who thrived at Amazon (survived 2+ years, at least one promo) I think "this guy fucks". Just getting hired at Amazon is not a strong signal unless it was for L6+. Obviously, beyond that, highly team dependent.

    I’d choose whatever project sounds more exciting. In both positions, as a 59 or L4, you’ll be told what to work on and it will be your job to learn and execute. If this is for an SDE gig, you will likely have more autonomy earlier at Amazon which can be a good or a bad thing depending on the person. If you’re good at what you do, Amazon will likely let you run faster and make a greater impact than at MSFT at a lower level. But again, this can be org dependent.

    MSFT (excluding Azure) is generally “easier” and safer. But who wants easy and safe out of college?

    Been at both. If you rock, Amazon pays way higher than MS, but that means much worse wlb at Amazon.
    If s/he is planning to have family/kids soon, then absolutely MS.
    Also by going to MS, s/he'll have enough time to leetcode and get prepared for Fb/G.

  • Amazon is more prestigious. And looks better in your resume. And will be more likely to get you jobs elsewhere in growing your career.

    Microsoft isn’t as bad these days but it just has nothing really going for it. It’s much easier though.
