After getting into Google, I’m thinking about quitting and follow my dreams.

I’ve been working at Google for 3 months now, I had switched with the promised of remote work because previous company was going back to office, but now they are telling me I need to come to office in coming months.

I went from 110k tc to now 180k tc.

My issue is in 2019 I started a YouTube channel and after doing remote work for a long time I was able to make my channel profitable(requires some travel), last year total revenue 123k. But at the same time I always wanted to work at Google and the work so far is no bad, I have Yoe 3 but I am confident I can grow fast and reach to where I want to be.

My YouTube channel has always been more like a hobby, I have never really thought on what can happen if my views start to drop within 5, 7, or 10 years (so far they are just increasing). Because I’ve always had my swe job I never paid too much attention to what could happen, but now I am thinking about dropping my main job (past dream job at Google) to persuade full time YouTuber.

Mind you, this job is very important to me, my parents think I’m CRAZY if I leave it, also it took so much effort to get, and I feel like if I were to leave it and come back it will be very challenging.

Has anyone left their job for a crazy YouTube idea? Or similar cases? I’m looking for advice from someone who’s been through similar stuff.

there’s a guy named Jomatech who literally was in the same shoes as you. he quit his job at google swe to work full time as a youtuber. his advice was only make the switch once you’re financially stable enough that you can afford to make that jump

I wouldn’t. Success on YouTube is fleeting and inconsistent. Soon, your shilling mobile games and VPN services and begging people to tip you on Patreon. I’m a content creator and the income is inconsistent. Keep in mind you’re on your own for healthcare and you’ll lose a lot of other perks. Do YouTube for 5 years, save every penny and buy a house with cash but keep your day job.

Your dream job turned out to be just a regular gig that is the problem. Too many people especially on Blind hype up Google and other FAANG but they are no different for the average SWE than any other tech company. Wait for a year and then jump to another company that doesn’t require RTO and continue on your channel then. Win win.

    Don’t worry about your folks.
But you can def keep doing YT on the side while building cushion and assessing whether you really want to bail and go solo.
Keep the day job until your hand is forced by YT revenue being way more than google work, or Google tells you to make a choice (sounds unlikely).
