Asking salary range up front for LinkedIn recruiters

May 19, 2021 13 Comments

I have been getting more LinkedIn recruiters reaching out lately and some of the positions sound interesting and I would like to find out more.

I am wondering if it is a dick move for my first response to essentially be “what is the salary range offered for the position?”.

I don’t want to waste anyone’s time if the comp isn’t there. I know I can search blind and levels fyi for the recent offer comps but does not work for smaller companies or more obscure roles.

TC= 250k (stock appreciation). 5yoe

Should I ask for the range up front before taking “intro call” or no?

    Yup I do it and frame it as “to be respect of your time” think about their incentives - it’s bad for everyone. Also I am at FB so most folks usually respond I am out of range

  • Yes. It's important. That's one of the deciding factor. I used to do phone screen, the full onsite and finally got an offer from a startup.

    Anytime during the process when I asked what the band is for this role. The recruiter dodged it. He said our offer acceptance rate is 80 percent. I am like okay. But ended up wasting my time and rejected their offer at the end. Be up front about expectations is a good thing

    absolutely! ask. if they are weird about it and/or dodge the question, move on, the opportunity likely wasn’t worth your time anyway.
