Keep seeing Roku mentioned here & TC looking pretty competitive. To me Roku just seems like an unnecessary platform in the world of smart TVs. Am I missing something? What is compelling about their future roadmap? What is their competitive advantage? Should I give them another look?

You don't need blind to answer this. It's quite simple. If Roku shut down their services can you notice ?

If you are simply watching Netflix, Amazon, HBO; do you really need Roku ? You can buy any streaming device and watch stuff.

I don't see Roku surviving beyond 1-2 yrs. Their stock is hammered and practically it's gone dumpster.

Besides, Roku has their famous VP of Search and Recommendations who is known to attack employees dealing with personal family situations. Stop buying Roku products for employee harassment.

@sr2mv2 I’m uncomfortable with how confident you seem in your view while presenting very thin justification, thanks tho

Roku is up 1,000% in 5 years while Google is up 280% for the same period, sounds like sour grapes to me.

  • Roku is going to be relevant for the next decade atleast imo. Their hardware is just one part of their business. Their biggest revenue growth contributor is going to be ads, and ads on tv is not going away anytime. And due to their extensive partnerships with tv companies which run their OS, they have a big head up against other advertising companies. They might not have a linear growth story but long term outlook remains solid.

I'm a bit confused...how is Roku a useless platform when you have so many smart tvs using Roku as their main OS?

Lots of smart people here, there's growth opportunities. Like anywhere it depends a bit on the team...and yes we're hiring a lot.

Roku is the TV OS leader in the US and expanding internationally. It will continue to be the leader on streaming TV. It appeals to users that want a simple OS, generally easy going cost, and easy to find channels as they migrate from cable to streaming. Consistently it is selected as either the #1 or #2 OS/device for TVs over Google, Apple, Amazon. We expect to continue to the grow substantially the next several years as does Wall Street (source: public SEC filings).

Thanks for the info. How would you describe the tone at the top? Is it good culture overall despite the vp of eng event?

In any big company, you don't really see the execs all the time - It's your business leader and they're sending out info every week. I don't know what the "vp of eng event" is supposed to be, there's a lot of VP of Engs here.
