What do you guys think about accepting a counter offer from your existing employer promising with better work opportunities in near future? The primary reason for exploring outside opportunity was better work but now my current manager is offering to put me on better and interesting projects. Compensation and other aspects about both jobs are very similar.

My only worry is that you might be labeled a โ€œflight riskโ€ by your current employer and they may not hesitate to replace you/they may take measures to find a replacement soon

      ^ this.

While the counter offer is in theory a good thing, the fact that you had to find another job for leverage your promotion or raise or responsibility level is an indication that they either took advantage of you and/or not value your talents as best they could.

However on the other side of the coin if you didnt even make your case or express you were deserving of these things before seeking another role externally, why would management think or give you more money for the heck of it? It works both ways.

  • Any manager anywhere uses a better project promise as the first weapon to keep people. A good number of people fall for this crap. The other intangible promise is " we'll promote you the next cycle ". If you really want to stay and have an exact number in your mind for salary and level regardless of the intangibles, be transparent and let your manager know. If everything is taken care of in a snap and you're told a binary yes or no in a few hours, accepting a counter offer is not as bad as everyone make it seem to be. What you don't want to do is have a blob of quasi wishes that cannot be solved immediately. That would brand you in a bad way.

Last place when I gave notice I had an offer from my managerโ€™s skip to immediately transfer to a more interesting group, and it only took him one business day to put it together. That, or a โ€œThis position is open, would you like it with a raise?โ€ are real counters. What you got is lip service.

For the record I still left, and donโ€™t regret it.

  • "Better work opportunities in the near future" is a joke. I'd leave now and secure that for yourself as soon as you start your next gig.

    +2 for flight risk, too.
