Worth it Long-Term to move to Bay Area (HQ)?

Jul 26, 2021 17 Comments

My wife and I are early to mid-30s, have 2 young children, both below Kindergarten age. I’m intrigued at the idea of pursuing a position in San Francisco to work out of Salesforce Tower (HQ).

I currently live in Texas and I fully understand how outrageous the living costs are in the Bay Area. However, I’m wondering if it would be a good long-term career decision to try to move to SF for just a few years and then trying to get back to Texas after.

Are there better career opportunities if you work out of HQ at Salesforce for a few years vs working in Texas for a few years?

If I can accelerate #tech #my career/open more doors down the road by working out of the HQ, it is worth it to me to live in a smaller house etc for a few years.

Terrible idea long term. Especially if you have a family.

Why would that be better than developing your network in the local job market where you want to be long-term? Even if you plan to stay at Salesforce forever?

    • I just feel like the SVPs and above all pretty much came from or are in the Bay Area. If I want to get to that level, I wonder if working at the HQ for a few years would help.

Bay Area is significantly better not just in terms of career opportunities and TC growth but also in terms of weather and the ability to get funding for starting your own company. People complain about cost of living but there are plenty of people on non tech incomes having very successful lives here. With a tech income you are in the best industry in Bay Area and can easily be extremely successful here

    • This^ is very true. I am always surprised at the hate people (even people who have never been to the bay area) on blind have for the bay area. It's sickening. Even people who do not make tech salaries live very successful lives in the bay area. It's not as bad as potrayed here on blind.

    • Only if you live way out in the burbs. Unless you doctor, lawyer, or some other professional, you are not living in peninsula or SF on normal incomes here. You ain’t buying a $1.5m home (which is a god damn starter home in the peninsula) flipping burgers or serving drinks.

  • How much more you gonna make? If you plan to live very frugally while in the Bay Area and are going to be pulling in $400K+ then maybe it makes sense. But it doesn’t make sense otherwise. Texas is cheap and $225k ain’t bad.

There is some truth to being in SF and at some popular company leading to better things a bit but it’s also very easy for you to get pulled into the rat race here. I don’t really know if I’d move here with a family just because the places popular with families are stupid $$$$.

Single hetero men should definitely not move here unless they love being celibate.

Building your network in sf might help when you move back and want to work remote. That’s about all I can think of being useful. But that means you are gonna fucking work hard to get that rep. Daddy gonna be working nights and weekends.

  • Btw I have a cousin living in us for over 30 years. I asked him if immigration to USA worth it. He always said No! It doesn't stay where you are. Here government ia not good quality of life ia low etc... (all negatives) I moved here and I am so grateful I haven't listened to him. He is still living here and not going back to the country 😏
