Why do so many people here call divisions or departments "orgs"?

Orgs is shorthand for organization, which is the whole company. like the microsoft or disney organization. that's the highest part of the governance hierarchy

then you have dePARTments or DIVsions in them, or some chapters or sections or so. But I see people refer to things like "the gmail org", implying that gmail itself would be it's own organization

Why is that?

Because culture and expectations often differ so much between them that they're essentially different orgs.

I mean you are not wrong in the description and i agree, but i still think it makes it more hard to differ from the Gmail and google organization using the same word like that.

It's because nobody says "the Google organization", they say "the company, Google"

  • You are simply mistaken. Org in a corporate context is synonymous with child nodes under a parent node in the tree of employees, which is why it’s also called the “org chart”.

    “Who’s org are you in?”
    “I’m in <name>’s org”

Mostly because they each have their own P&L to manage.

how does a bank or a car company not have that? The service places and the engine research engineers probably don't share the same budget and have different goals

I never saw someone talk about different "orgs" at Volkswagen or Ford

Different companies have different org structures. Some are product (or service)-based whilst others are function based and cut across products / services.
