Just noticed today that a key person on my team has updated all his LinkedIn info, even posting a PDF of his resume to his feed.

This project is not going great, and to be honest, I'm probably on my way out in a few months too. Just a bad company to work for, so I don't blame him.

That said, would be nice-to-have if he stuck around for another couple months until this is completely shipped.

I don't want to shame him or even stop him, just ask him to delay it a month or two for the teams benefit if possible. Would also look better on his resume to have shipped it and stayed a bit longer (he's only been here 7 months)

Any suggestions on how to broach the subject? Or should I just ignore it and hope for the best?

UPDATE:

Did not expect it to be that universally opposed. Good to know!

And to be clear, my intention was never to try and stop it, just delay it a bit. But even that seems likely to be weird, unless I can offer something significant in exchange (which I can't).

So thanks, I'll let nature take it's course.

Leave him alone. He is leaving because he is not compatible with the position. The company wouldn’t think twice before kicking him out.

    • Money is important but there’s more that you can do here imo. You’ve recognized their desire to move to the next stage. Could you help them out by writing a great recommendation on their LinkedIn profile? Talk with them first about this. Maybe you could help reshape their resume for the better, you have intimate knowledge of their projects and accomplishments. Pretending the situation doesn’t exist isn’t optimal imo.

Edit: especially if you consider the current project to be important, seeing it through may be in their best interest if you help them achieve higher goals after completion.

I think that's weird too though. Because for the moment anyways, he's still reporting to me and likely doesn't have a concrete offer or he'd say so.

So by bringing it up at all (however nicely), I'd be putting him in a position to defend himself against his manager, which isn't great. Unless I'm really willing to go all-in and just help him get another job. Which is also delicate and not something I want to do.

I'll wait until he gives notice and provide the recommendations at that time.

  • Bruh leave him alone. It'd be highly unprofessional to intervene. Only reason seems like you want him to stay is to make your project easier. "Will look good on his resume" is a weak excuse.

The only reasonable way to intervene is to not bring it up and talk about general career direction/happiness and be prepared to do something about it. Since you are planning to leave anyway then ignore.

    • Yup, this. But also it takes a while to get a job, usually a couple months. There’s a good chance he’s still with the company by the time the project ships
