switching MSFT -> GOOG and going up a level?

Nov 9, 2017 16 Comments

I'm talking to recruiter to setup interview loop.

I'm SDE1 (60) at MSFT, and I wish to interview at google for whatever their equivalent to MSFT SDE2 is.

two questions:

1. What is Google's equivalent?
2. How do i tactfully ask/suggest this?

Not much of a chance that will happen. You can land at T3 with a significant comp increase but you won't get up leveled by GOOG. I interviewed at 60 and was promoted to 61 after I had the offer.

    Comp is king though.

I know of someone who has three years industry, came in at lvl 60 and performs like a slow explorer intern. If this is you, you won't get an offer, no worrying about level at Google.

Depends on your years of experience.
If it's under 2 years it'll be tricky to get a T4 offer.

    • think there's any risk to that? say I go in for t4 interview. But I end up performing good enough for t3, would I have shot myself in the foot and lost opportunity?

The risk is not that much in interviews, more in expectations if you get an offer. As an l4, you will be expected to design and deliver projects end to end, without any guidance. The shooting yourself in the foot probably applies between l4 and l5 interviews, where l5 has a significant system design component

My guess would be T4 but I don't know Microsoft level at all. How many years of experience?

Just tell the recruiter you want to be hired at this level because you will get it next promotion at Microsoft. They may say yes, they may say no, it will depend on your interview performance anyway, but say it before the interview that they can target the right level.

T3 is SWE 2 and T4 is SWE 3. Likely you will get T3 as L60 is almost entry level in MS.
