How do you manage to get interview calls?

My friends referred me for a few companies but I never received an interview call. The only time I managed to get a call was
1. when my friend shared a good connection with the hiring manager and handed over my resume directly to him, or
2. when one recruiter was kind enough to schedule an interview when I reached out to him on LinkedIn.

Apart from that, it's mostly a dry season. It has been several months since I have been applying to jobs. I got referrals at Apple, Google, Microsoft, PayPal, Roku but no interview calls :( . I pinged a few recruiters on LinkedIn but they rarely respond.

I don't think my resume is too bad. But I may be wrong. Can anyone let me know what keywords to include in the resume, or anything else that I can do to get more calls? Would it help if I mention my location as SF on my resume (I am currently not in any of the tech cities)?

This is for data scientist position.

Don't lose your hope. Good schools can get you calls easily but securing the job and sustaining needs talent and skills. If you are skilled you will do well. As for getting calls do cold call recruiters and managers in linked in, attend hackathons and meet ups. You will build connections and from there you can make progress with your job search. Good luck.

    • OP, pick a field you wanna explore your career in. Let’s say you like web development, then as PayPal said, try to build connections with folks who already have that knowledge using meets ups. Explore more in that area, work on a project, learn more about the field. Once you have that knowledge, update your LinkedIn and maintain your github. Before you realize recs from top tier companies will start calling you.

The whole idea for recs is they like to move forward with candidates who they feel could crack the interviews. Either they see that you’re from top tier school which means to them you’re good. Else they see if you’ve enough relevant experience and expertise, again this shows them you can crack the interview.

When I started looking out for job, got only one call in first month. After that, updated linkedin profile summary, added more relevant skills. Tried to updated LinkedIn profile once a day so that it might appear at top when searched by recruiters. Also, applied on compnies websites.

This part about updating the LinkedIn profile regularly is important. It goes back to the days of monster.com, but this thing still works

  • Get LinkedIn Premium and have the career interests open for new opportunities. Set a job alert and reach out to recruiters. I have seen success atleast some recruiters will respond back.
