What's the difference between MLE vs MLE infra role? My recruiter said that my experience is more suitable for MLE infra role rather than MLE role? I am from SWE/Data Eng background with some past experience in ML. As per my recruiter this role has a "ML Design" round - but didn't provide much details about it at this point. Would appreciate if someone can shed some light on this design round.

Also does "does mid level position" mean E5/IC5? My recruiter did not clarify the leveling.

MLE infra probably doesn’t need to know any ML theory unlike MLE. I would say MLE infra is exactly the same as regular SWE except you are working closely with MLE folks and providing tools monitoring pipeline infra etc for the. Of course that depends on the company in question

    • This is very accurate. Look at ml platforms such as Uber's Michelangelo. ML infra engineers could also be working to build a platform for ml engineers / data scientists to do rapid experimentation, distributed model training, easy/fast deployments, etc.

@OP, I work in ml infra at a well-known company so feel free to DM me if you have questions.

Why companies build their ML infra instead of using something like Vertex AI or Sagemaker?

Is it too expensive to use them?
