I got an offer as an SDE I with the expectation that I’d move. There are a lot of horror stories especially in AWS and I’m really nervous to pack up my life just to end up dealing with all of that alone and without a support system. This is my first FAANG job. I feel like taking the job is the right thing for my career but I want to try to find a way to stay in nyc if I can. Any tips on how I could go about doing that?

Yes, please don’t move if you don’t feel comfortable. It aggravates the new job anxiety. You want to be in your safest place mentally. Good luck, my friend.

Don't do it. I spent the first couple years of my career in nyc and it was super fun. You only live once don't sacrifice for a company

You need to cancel your offer and ask the recruiter for a team in nyc or remote. Say location is important to you and you can’t proceed. Note you already passed the onsite and results are good for a year, just need a team to get an offer.

Remember you are in the driver seat. You wont accept an offer unless your conditions are met. Recruiter is simply trying to get their bonus as soon as possible - dont let them string you along. There are an insane number of openings at amazon for remote or otherwise.

Src: I found my own team via linkedin once my initial team that interviewed me did not have headcount anymore, and another team wouldnt accept my conditions on start date

If you do end up accepting, ask them to prorate your signup bonus monthly. That way, if you leave before the first 2 years you only have to pay back part of the relocation.

Relocation is different from signing bonus. Repayment may be similar if both are lump sum, but yr1 signing bonus is automatically prorated and paid with pay check for amounts over 20k
