Is Dropbox still a good company to work at?

Aug 22, 2021 33 Comments

I got a positive response for IC2 from the on-site rounds and I am looking to negotiate an offer. YoE ~3.

Current TC ~180K. So there is definitely going to be a boost in compensation. But is Dropbox still a good company to work at? I am early in my career and I want to be at the right place. I have just started interviewing and I don't have any pressure to move. So I don't mind taking my time here.

Hearing great things about Dropbox in terms of WLB, engineering talent, remote work etc. but is it a dying company? Would going to Dropbox be a wrong move for my career? Especially from a company like Microsoft, where I am at right now, which has so many products, is doing incredibly well and is a tier 1 company.

The truth is most people on blind doesn't really know about Dropbox, and what competitive edge dropbox has over GDrive and iCloud, they don't really know how Dropbox works. I don't blame them as they are not the target user of us, and Cloud storage is indeed a niche and competitive market with limited growth. But the reality is, blind users are not good investor, just like they are wrong about Snap and assume no one uses anymore, but turns out, they are just too old for it.

The thing is, Dropbox is transforming itself from a single product cloud storage toward platform collaboration, and it has dozen of products in development/released and making good source of revenue already. If you check out the quarter earning report of Dropbox, you will know we are doing great as a company, internally, the growth of our new products are accelerating at an astonishing rate, hence, close to double in stock value in the last 8-9 month.

Needless to say, I am making double than what I was making back in msft, with amazing perks, and great engineer quality and code quality standard in contrast to msft. Sure there are better and more promising companies and unicorn out there, but it is a mile better than msft in my opinion.

Early in career, recommend Courage over comfort. Go to Dropbox gain different experience. You can always come back to MSFT even stronger.

    • There are lot of other companies to go to. Op’s question was if Dropbox is good choice or not.

Mute point, simply reading the header and missed the rest? Key is, What's the question behind the question?

Op already knows the answer if it good choice; better comp, wlb, strong sde team, etc, if not similar to what he had @ MSFT. I'm addressing WHY is a good choice for his career not the WHAT

There are most posts out there about working at Dropbox but I’ll just cover some points.
First of all Msft is not tier-1 🤣🤣 it is retirement home for most with super low pay.
(If rest n vest is your goal with mediocre pay then sure) azure might have some good work but the pay really sucks. Even Amzn pays better which is a statement in itself.

Not moving to dbx, the product itself is not going to do any more magic i think it is past its peak, but still the second highest market holder for its domain (only behind gdrive n way ahead of one drive) with stable increase of users so we r good there.
With more than $1Billion in free cash flow we r investing in multiple other ideas plus hellosign n docsend our recent acquisitions r doing well too, so we r moving towards multi product company.
Lets talk pay, level wise IC3 is same as L63 but even L66 at Msft don’t make as Ic3 here. I make $500k+ (due to stock appreciation) and every year refreshers are $100k (again msft even L66 don’t get this)
Wlb is as good as msft n definitely better than azure, remember we r not sacrificing wlb for top-tier pay.
Small company so tons of stuff to build n learn, i moved from G and learned more in 6months than my 2 yrs at G (i won’t even compare with msft)
We still have people from G/FB joining every week, Amzn folks dying to get in, but sure msft is better than all these so 🤣🤣🤣

Overall, there r issues which we r fixing n now its better with timothy coz he is making good directional changes, but Dropbox is not going anywhere and our stocks r up 60% since last year n still undervalued so good scope.

OP I left Microsoft to go to Dropbox. Easy decision given I doubled my salary. Dropbox won’t die but it won’t thrive spectacularly either. But given the level of talent, on average, engineers at Dropbox are more talented and higher paid than Microsoft.

Yes - but only if you don't tie your self worth to the stock/market performance of your employer. Dropbox has great pay, people, wlb and engineering quality. The last part is really important imo. I really couldn't give a rat's ass if we're first or fifth in the cloud storage market as long as we can sustain our customer base. The way to do that is building good quality products.

Have you tried searching/indexing in iCloud or OneDrive? It's ass compared to what Dropbox offers. Not to mention syncing and smart syncing
