Worried about joining twitter

Apr 14 25 Comments

Got offer from Twitter recently

Senior SWE with TC 410K

Current TC: $265K

YOE: 6

Worried about layoffs or other terrible stuff. I didn’t expect this Elon stuff happen when I interview with Twitter.

What should I do? Thank you #

If Elon takes over Twitter your grant will double in value in a few years. SpaceX and Tesla are both hyper fast growth and attract the best talent. His takeover will be phenomenal for Twitter.

That’s true. They can convert them to options. But options only matter if the company is going to go public again and who knows if Elon goes that route. They can also buy the unvested shares out for pennies on the dollar to settle all unvested shares. I’ve seen it done both ways.

You can still have private stock not just options. Works same way as public stock. Is less liquid but generally less volatile

You could also ask your recruiter if you can defer an acceptance decision for a few months. Just mention how you really want to join Twitter but hopefully they can understand how all the uncertainty around the takeover news makes it hard to know what to expect from the terms of the offer, and if you can wait say 2 months (maybe sooner) before giving the official answer, it would let you see how things develop and put you much more at ease.

I personally know of cases in Twitter where candidates were allowed to wait over a year to make a decision on an offer (not a deferred start date, but deferring the entire accept/decline decision for a year, then negotiating a later start date even after that).

Surely given the craziness of this news, they’ll be compassionate and work with you to give you a less high-stakes pressure decision timeline.

Just look at Anaplan situation. If the company goes private, new employees get screwed the most. Stay away.

Just accept and make sure you know how to make Elons coffee the way he likes it
