[Question] offer decision between DevRel and PM
Hi all,
I am looking for some advice of offer decision from experienced PMs.
Background: developer(7y; embedded systems and backend)/data scientist (2y)/technical PM(1y)
Option 1: developer relationship manager / Nvidia
TC: X
Pros: focus on AI/ML, customer-facing role with Top leading customer, great commute, (kinda) top tier Tech firm
Cons: not exactly PM role for longterm career path, 20k less TC, no cash bonus
Option 2: Data PM / Visa
TC: X+20k
Pros: PM role, higher base + cash bonus, data platform and DS internal products
Cons: worse commute, non-Top tier in Tech, not great company culture on glassdoor, fewer rsus
I was focusing on PM job hunting, specifically for data-heavy roles because of my engineering and DS background. I was attempting to stick on PM route for my career planning through this switch opportunity and I have to say it was harder than my thought to get a PM gig, although I did have some big names (not top top tier) in the pocket. Spcifically I was questioned mostly for not having enough experience in customer-facing experience. That is the main reason why I took an chance to do DevRel hunt, since it will be highly customer-facing + technical.
DevRel is so new for me that I am not sure if I may like it or not, but I do want to leverage this chance to improve customer-facing skill. My worry is heavily on next job, if I decide this one don't work out and I want to switch back to PM role, I may have even harder time to receive a gig as PM later because of my longer yoe. Plus ML/AI is popular sexy topics for sure.
In the contrary, Visa is good and the role is strict PM, but certainly not the top player in tech segment. Plus the rank of company culture is not well-recognized. Though higher base+bonus means more direct financial rewards, which is also a good incentive.
Any comment will be really appreciated. Especially some insights from experienced PM hiring managers, what are your thoughts when you evaluate candidates with strict experience or diversified background?
