Hi, A friend was recently “terminated” from Microsoft with no severance; the reason was performance related. I was wondering what the implications were, since no severance was included. Is this the same as being “fired”? My understanding is that unless there is a strong firable offense, performance-related terminations are layoffs and came with severance. Does anyone from Miceosoft know the general policy and difference between these types of letting people go?
Terminated == fired, no severance, no benefits.
Maybe your friend didn't tell you the full story
Fired for cause, stack ranked 5, below expectations
Your friend was fired. No severance when fired. You get fired when your manager does not think you are good at your job. It is usually not because of "strong firable offense", just not good enough work.
Thanks! This was informative. Were you a former softie, or is this generally true across the industry?
Anyone I’ve ever known to be fired for performance got severance in exchange for agreeing not to sue
Termination equals fired. A layoff only happens when the position is eliminated due to restructuring. Termination is due to the employee, layoff is due to the employer.
"Termination" != "fired" "Layoff" == "termination" There is involuntary termination, and there is voluntary termination. FFS, I don't understand why people just say things they completely make up, as if they are delivering knowledge.
It shouldn't have come as a surprise either, your friend most probably got a lot of warnings from his manager before getting terminated.
🤔
Haha do you always comment this
Don’t be friends with terminated people
This is the worst advice ever. You don’t always get terminated because of what you did. Sometimes a manager can fuck you up. The worst thing you can do is dump a friend during his hard time.
A coworker just got terminated because they hired a cheaper replacent.
Wow Microsoft fires non-performers, wish my company would have done the same.
TC? Location?
TC 25k India, my team has lots of people who ended up here just because they had yoe, and consider the bank as their retirement place. Manager is not able to fire because he would be questioned as to why fire a company employee instead of a contractor, or why recruit him in the first place. The situation has now changed to just pile up work on the good performer, and expect the big yoe guy to work at his own pace, without questioning them.
They were probably fired for cause, which means something serious like lying/stealing/assaulting a coworker etc.
Not always my friend
