Hi, I received an offer Software Engineering, not autopilot. Staff level. how do the holidays “flex” really work? it seems fishy : no accrued vacation, just seems to need some validation by manager. knowing that Tesla is famous for bad wlb, my assumption is that managers limit significantely the holidays they give to their report. in practice how people do get as vacation? I am pretty sure that it is not as sexy as Saleforce or Netflix who have a real unliminted pto.
Why Tesla over Apple ?
Actually it's the opposite. Without a quota, people aren't driven to "use up" their PTO and you naturally take less time off, so the company wins. As a manager, I approve all PTO requests from anyone on my team without question. For super long requests (4+ weeks) maybe we'll discuss working remotely for 1 week. In the firmware org this is pretty standard. I can't speak for all departments. Obviously it's probably worse in the factory, but if you are in Palo Alto on most teams it's likely a similar experience. But that doesnt matter if the entire building is workaholics and nobody actually takes PTO. I definitely fall into that category. I have to consciously force myself to take PTO.
Can I work for you? You sound like a great manager
My manager has approved all my pto requests. People are generally reasonable.
In general, it is “managers discretion” and anything longer than 2 weeks consecutively required Director approval. Our team, a Production support role, gets a no question 4 weeks, with following weeks lower priority so that other team members can get their time off. If no one wants to take it, it’s yours. No technical limit.
