anyone knows about autonomous systems ? you think tesla is gonna beat others or is it usual BS from Elon?
It might resolve to whether a LIDAR turns out to be required for level 4/5 or not. Elon says no. Most everyone else is using them. I don't mean by regulation, I mean for safety.
I think Tesla is gonna blow others out of water in autonomous cars. They have this new program called “fleet learning” that silently learns from every driver of tesla, It notes down the roads, maps, hazards and learns from how drivers react to the obstacles/certain situations. They have been producing new cars at a faster rate, which means the more cars on road, the quicker the conv neural nets will be trained and ready for safe-driving. I personally think they have been collecting humongous amount of data and increasing the acceleration of collecting the data and learning from it day-by-day.
But can they make sense of this data is the question
They’re hiring extremely smart Stanford PhD graduates to work on Neural nets. They had a talk where they explained what kind of problems are they facing while training the models and why current hardware was not good enough to process in real-time and how they upgraded them. This is when he said LIDARs (lasers to generate 3D map of the surroundings) are fool’s errand because they’re expensive and will unnecessarily increase the cost of the cars. 360 degree cameras and sensors will do the job. We don’t need LIDARs to generate the 3D map and process in realtime. The point is they’re actively working on it by upgrading software/hardware and hiring right talent to do the job. If the data didn’t make sense they would have known it by now.

Fww Eve though Google has the most number of Autonomous miles traveled in waymo, it's been in beta for years now. Tesla's got magnitudes more data and more importantly more impact. I don't see people signing up for waymo taxis unless it's 2-3x cheaper than normal Ubers until the general public is comfortable with it
