If you have been on blind the last couple of years you have seen all the posts about dei, lowered hiring bars, and companies losing prestige because they were too easy to get into. Despite the fact many of us obtained new employment during covid.....everyone was pointing the finger away from themselves. What I think is becoming apparent now is that the majority of us who were hired into faang the last couple years, including those who hopped from faang to faang, were essentially charity cases. I include myself here as I never sniffed a faang offer prior to covid and received multiple afterwards. Companies were hiring just to hire. Covid created temporary demand and money was cheap which created a ripple effect of companies needing staffing for low value projects. Everything was about "growth". Now in a recessionary environment and with money no longer being cheap not only do I see recruitment going back to pre-covid levels....I see it going back to pre low interest rate levels. Getting a nice offer from a big company will once again be a meaningful signal about your skill level and previous contributions. That's to say being good at leetcode probably won't be enough anymore. We all should have been way more humble and realized what was going on in real time as to be better prepared for the current reality. Hopefully lessons were learned TC: 365k and not laid off (yet)

I was hired over 5 years ago, bar definitely lowered. New people just aren't intelligent enough to learn everything in time
are you really unbiased to conclude on the intelligence part? Precovid, the onboarding is much easier due to in-office interaction (project understanding or bugs/env setup, just ask your colleagues for advice) just my 2 cents
I was hired 10 years back. The next 5 years I felt the bar continuously dropped. People who hired me were hired 5 years before me and they told me bar has dropped significantly in next 5 years. See a pattern?
True
I believe this is true and also true for me. What should we do to adapt though?
This isn't true. This is just straight up more self-service for the people on here who think they're superior to everyone else. And there's a lot of them.
Good read! Are you still at the Citi?
The best thing you can do during times of feast is to prepare for the famine. That sounds harsh, but it's not meant to be. Recognizing you're in a feast is difficult, especially if that's all you've ever known. Winter is always coming, it's just that tech summers (hiring sprees) are super variable in length. The last tech summer was 8 years long, and if you have 8 yoe or less it's all you've ever experienced. Be grateful, stay humble, and do what's best for you + your goals. Sometimes it means remodeling a house instead of buying a new one. Other times it means buying a house a bit further out because the payments keep you under 30% of your monthly income. Tax: 26 YOE. Happily took a 90% pay cut last year, to pivot to career coaching for the tech field. Happy to DM with anyone who needs to talk. I've experienced five layoffs in my career, survived three and got caught by two of them.
Very well said!
I have 18YOE. I follow the advice above. I used to be in FAANG but decided to leave when I saw the trend. I got some very juicy FAANG offers too, but knew I could get laid off later if there were cuts. I remodeled the house instead of buying a bigger one, etc Winter is not here yet. We are in Fall. Things are going to get a bit worse before they get any better. The geopolitical environment can get worse and create further problems for the economy. It’s important to work for companies that deliver clear products, and be working with teams that are clearly delivering that value (not side projects)
Waiting in India for some of your laid off jobs to land here 🙏
Faangs are mature companies now and over time, they will lose their “prestige”. Get over it.
that's nice. I do hate the fact that many ppl who don't belong to tech allowed in, getting huge offers and producing very few value
It's frustrating to see project managers and other non-tech roles getting the ridiculous pay that should be reserved for domain-specific roles.
Comparison is the thief of joy. Enjoy your money and don’t eye what other people are earning
It has nothing to do with the fact that leadership at these companies is so disconnected from reality that they’re entertaining their delusions instead of running a business. Dick rockets, metaverses and 44billion dollar drug fueled purchases, anyone?
What you observed was obvious to intelligent minds since the beginning of the first lockdown across the globe and WFH and IT services went boom.
Stop lying.
Getting the brand on your resume remains the reason you chase a FAANG company.
