Tipping Uber/Lyft drivers

I was laughed off blind for sharing that I always tip my drivers. Turns out one or two others agree with me. So asking again. Do you tip your ride share driver?

  • I tip Lyft drivers since the app asks for a tip. I don't tip Uber drivers since the app doesn't ask. Tipping is a stupid practice that we should do away with, though. Pay your employees a liveable wage.

A whole lotta people in this thread that have never had to scrape by and take on second jobs to make ends meet. I ALWAYS tip my uber / Lyft drivers, as well as anyone that "waits" on me - delivery drivers, waitstaff, the lady that waxes my eyebrows. Wages in this country are shit, and "the company should just pay them more" is a fine argument, except it does nothing except try to assuage your own desires to not tip. Because companies are about profit, and they aren't going to suddenly change a business model because people aren't tipping. They're going to pay what they can get away with.

I grew up in poverty, and lived on the streets for a while before I got back on my feet. I worked shitty jobs, sometimes multiples, until I could get myself into college (which was luck combined with hard work), and now that I'm making money I feel it's only right to share it with people that aren't in as good of a position. Who knows, the tip I provide might be the difference between being able to take the bus to work or having to walk.

@leuM37 As I said earlier, $90k is uber's claim, but most pubs put it at $30k - $60k AFTER expenses. You can rely on facts or you can rely on your intuition. Like I said, read the buzzfeed article. They factor in driver expenses. Anyway, I'm done discussing this with you.

If you tip an Uber driver you are ruining it for the rest of us. Tipping should be abolished. Charge what your product costs.

Always tip your Lyft driver. It's a service. Even a $1 is fine, but always something.

Feel bad for Lyft that they're forcing their drivers to rely on tips. They should increase fares not ask tips

At the same time I understand that increasing fares would make them less competitive with Uber which is burning VC money for low fares. We need an alternative to Uber to maintain competition though. The solution could be to differentiate the way telecom operators do.

Tipping is socially awkward in any situation and biased towards expectation rather than what is deserved.
