What companies in Texas (preferably Houston, Dallas, Austin) pay well for SQL knowledge/experience. I am new to the scene but would like to be a Database admin after a few YOE.

As someone relatively young who started as a DBA, I would recommend software engineering instead. DBA is a thankless job. A lot of DBAs perform mundane tasks like backups, recovery, installations, etc. Very few get deep into the internals and really understand query performance. It's not fun learning the internals anyway. Also database as a service removes a lot of the need for a dedicated DBA, but that depends on the size of the product. On call can be bad and even the smallest changes can be stressful. I switched to engineering a year ago and won't ever go back. Good engineers are also great with databases, but not the other way around.

Having any degree will be helpful. If you're serious about it, look into some of the popular bootcamps. If you work hard and study data structures/algorithms, you can get a job at just about any company, even top tier. After graduating, I went from no name company --> Walmart --> AWS. TC has almost tripled, all in a year and a half. It was a big time commitment but it's been pretty life changing for me.

Dumb question but what does a DB admin do? No company I've ever worked for has had one.
