Is tech compensation a bubble?

I am just penning my thoughts and this story has no conclusion or questions.

I was talking to my roommate about whether he’ll like to work outside google to which he replied that he would consider if the other company pays him a 100k more than he’s making.

And that’s when I really hit me the compensation bubble we’re living in- the increment salary he wants is 70% higher than the median salary of a family for 4 in the United States.

This makes me feel privileged and I can maybe whine about know someone my age making more but that would make me someone whose not aware about the reality of world. I don’t think other field may as much as tech do and offer the work life balance we have.

People in tech, especially on Blind, have such an incredibly warped sense of reality, normalcy, and privilege. We are very blessed and fortunate to have the opportunities and pay we do, and the way I rationalize it is by paying it forward and helping others end up in the same position as I.

Look at the comments in this thread, most people on Blind have no friends, no social skills, and spend half their lives having meltdowns over not getting paid an incremental $20k. There’s more to life than money

  • Maybe a little, but not as much as some people think. People who got 500k offers aren't suddenly going to be making 150k. They will still be somewhere around 350k WCS

Google makes 100000 times more than the average business in the US. You are comparing apples to oranges.

Is this true? Genuinely curious. What about compared to other F10 companies? Is the high salary in tech from how absurd profit is in tech, or do we also have somewhat better profit:pay ratio? (What I’m trying to get at is people like the Walton family and their workers having to be on food stamps)

You should talk to some people in banking. I have a friend my age, whose bonus is about the same as my TC.

    Incredibly ungrateful person.

Probably why he’s doing so much better than us. Collectively we need to make sure our owners (the billionaires) pay us as much as possible.

This kind of banking comp is limited to a small set of bankers in the "revenue centers" like sales/trading and investment banking with extremely taxing environments and WLB. Many people who work in banking make same as/ less than the average SDE in tech at the same level if they're in other roles (research, compliance, etc.). Of course SDE in banking pays less than SDE in big tech as well.
