Hey everyone, currently a new grad trying to making it into the product space via APM programs. I don't have the traditional tech background, but I am doing my best to bridge the gap by learning how to code as much as I can. Already adjusted my resume a bunch from feedback, but the more the merrier!

I previously had a full time offer at Microsoft for their ACE program in Seattle, which was supposed to start this month. However, due to a misunderstanding where Microsoft thought I was supposed to graduate 3 months earlier from school, they had to rescind my offer since I can't get my Visa in time 😢 Now that I have graduated, I'm ready to get back into job seeking and I thought this would be the chance ( or mabye a sign) to pursue my dream of working in product management which I put off since I was discouraged because of my lack of a technical background! I figured out through hackathons late in my senior year that I really wanted to do PM and talked to many PM's about it + I have done over 50 Mock interviews just to prep and read a bunch of PM books. Now I just need to make it past resume screening ( haven't gotten any PM interviews so far). Hope this will also give me some great insight into that. All feedback is welcome !

As a side note: I Would love to get some general advice/tips/guidance for breaking into PM if anyone is willing to chat !

I have a hard time believing an intern for 4 months "managed a team of 6 engineers." While I usually encourage embellishment, this might be a little much if someone is actually reading

I was talking more in general, not just that one bullet. There are a lot of managed and led a group of people statements. Maybe you are a rockstar, but I have never met an intern that has led and managed anything

Luckily, Microsoft business internships is very generous with leading your own projects and choosing full timers to take time to join your team, which Im super grateful for. But perhaps it may sound overachieving. I could definitely tone it down a bit. Thank a bunch!

    Needs way more whitespace

  • What is a research manager intern?
Why does your degree have specialist at the end of it?
    92% doesn’t seem very accurate?
Way too much stuff everywhere. Use more white space. Expand to 2 pages if you need to but try to focus into a story.
What type of job are you looking for?
It looks like you are trying to add leadership skills, are you thinking you will get a management role?
A publication is not an award or certification. Where is is being published? Is it submitted?
You’re taking up too much space with stuff like “media channels” and “Graduated”.
1/2 your skills are domains the other half are skills.
Why are your work experiences so short?

    • You can and should list a pub before it is actually published. You just put “submitted to”. But the whole value of the publish is where you published it. Which you don’t list. It could be published by your lab or the most important journal in your industry. Obviously this makes all the difference in the world.

Objective is one thing, a sentence saying who you are is another.

  • Solid resume. Do you mind sharing a bit more about the misunderstanding that resulted in rescinding the offer? From my experience HR at Microsoft is quite flexible with start date and can adjust it if needed.

    • Sorry to hear that. Couldn't you apply to your manager's group as a fulltimer? I couldn't imagine Microsoft let go a candidate like that, especially a two-time intern.

My manager is looking out for any open roles for me, however it's quite difficult because the research division itself isf very lean as it is+ headcount is strict. I wouldn't be much help when they need people much more experienced. I would be happy to take in the challenge since Microsoft is a dream company of mine and my goal is to stay long term with them. But for the benefit of the company I would rather them hire someone who is a better fit for the role than me as a new grad. I'm hopeful something will come up in other areas. Hence why I try to reach out to as many managers on LinkedIn and other social networks. Also PM is something I have been interested in for a while and I would love to break into that space. I heard there are non tech employees who became PM's and learned the trade. Looking for an opportunity like that
