Early Career FAANG to Unicorn and Resume Implications

Have 1-2 yoe at my first job out of college at Amazon. Have been given a verbal offer to join a big Unicorn (think AirBnB, TikTok, Uber, Lyft) that will likely pay a lot more than my current job (being upleveled slightly as well).

With Amazon on my resume, I've definitely been able to get a lot more callbacks than before, they're a huge company everyone knows about. I wanted to ask if moving to another one of these companies would have any affect on my resume down the line. I assume if I want to stay as a SWE other places would love to see experience from one of those other places, but are they universally as loved as FAANGs? It seems like recruiters tend to target people who specifically work at Amazon, Msft, Google, etc., would I be losing out on this?

If I wanted to switch from software dev, would this have a bigger effect? Everyone knows Amazon is a huge tech company, but my worry is they might not see AirBnB for example the same way.

Haven't discussed comp yet but I think it will increase a substantial amount and I think I'm ready for a change anyways. Sorry if this is a naive question, still really have no clue how this industry works in regards to this sorts of stuff. #tech #softwareengineer

You'll always get inbound since you have amazon on the resume.

But please don't move if it is just for a comp raise.

Disclaimer: I moved to a unicorn about a month ago (too lazy to chang my blind) and loving the larger scope of work

Thanks for the response. Tbh comp raise is a big reason, along with the fact that I'm just kind of looking for a change, don't really see a long-term place for myself at Amazon. What do you think is a better reason for a change, why wouldn't you move just for money?

Do you mind disclosing what company you're at now? What are the biggest differences from working there vs Amazon?

  • I don't think Airbnb, tiktok, Uber, and Lyft would receive less callbacks. For the most part they're harder to get into than Amazon although I don't know if things have changed with the new pay

I did the same thing but from a design track. Left shopify after 2ish years for a lesser known but fast growing unicorn in the Bay Area.

Had the exact same worries as you - had a lot of recruiters dm’ing me (I’m assuming cuz of the name on my resume) and I didn’t want to lose that. But the higher comp, smaller team, and faster pace work meant I’d learn a lot, ship more work, while making more money - which was just too many more pros to say no to.

It’s definitely a risk, but we’re early in our careers so why not? Worst case, you boomerang back or find another FAANG.
