Considering L5 PM at Google vs. pending L6 promo at Meta

Hey folks, I've just been "approved for offer" by Google as a PM at L5 in SF. I am currently at L5 at Meta and will likely get a promo to L6 in July (already have 2 Excedes).
Trying to push back on Google on the leveling, but I've read that it's rare for PM's to be hired at L6 (is that true?).
They asked me for my desired comp, but looking at the info on levels.fyi, my current comp at Meta is higher than what is listed for L5 at Google. I'm not interested in taking a pay cut in addition to missing out on a promotion.
How aggressive do you think I can be in my ask? Can someone share reasonable cash + stock + sign on bonus breakdowns from recent offers?

Adding comp details as there seems to be a lot of interest here...
Salary: $210K
Bonus: 15% = $31K
Annual refreshers: ~ $150K
Unvested stock (at current price): ~$400K, reaching 4-year cliff next March.

+1 go for L6 at Google. If you’re really about to be L6 Meta, staying is probably the better move, then you can always reapply at Google for L6 in a year or two and be more likely to get the offer.

Thanks for these suggestions. Also leaning toward not moving at L5 myself. Doesn't seem like it's worth the aggravation

  • Congratulations! I’ve heard L6 comes with a big TC increase at Meta.

Thank you! That is what I heard as well so I'm trying to factor that into my decisioning. I want to make sure I'm not selling myself short but at the same time, I want to set reasonable expectations with the Google recruiter.

  • Will you join Google at L5 if they gave you higher TC? If yes, how much of a pay bump will make it worthwhile to skip upcoming promo? Self reflect to answer these questions.

My personal suggestion: tell Google to consider you for L6.

    Btw, Congrats on the offer.

Not sure how the value of $$ in my pocket changes? Less stress for the same pay doesn't sound like a bad choice. I am not sure I see the value of stroking my ego with a higher title if the money doesn't support it

    • Since you equate higher level with more stress and bigger ego, you are right that it probably is not the right choice for you.

No harm in asking for an appeal. You already have a PM job so don't really need to worry about timeline. If the appeal comes back as L5 reject the offer. The timeline to go from L5 to L6 at Google is years, and becoming IC6 at Meta is ~3 months away for you. If you win the appeal for L6 at Google, take it. Your new equity grant will give you a substantial bump in TC because it will take time for Meta IC6 refreshers to start really kicking in.
