I have an MBA and work in a non-eng tech role and have had trouble moving into PM. It’s not guaranteed. I think engineer to PM is the only way to really guarantee a transition like that.

  FAANG is different. Data eng is L-1 for eng. Data engineer != SWE. If you’re eng you just do a hackaquarter and switch. If you are anyone else you need VP support to even interview and they downlevel.

Go for it if you can get in top-3-5 schools, otherwise you can join F/G (not sure about the rest) which offer PM rotation programs for pm-wannabes
