Netflix compensation

How does Netflix compensation work? Is it really personal top of market or top of market for the skill set?

Ex. You got promoted to Senior at Google and you’d be able to be a staff at Facebook. Would Netflix pay you at the top end of Staff or top end of Senior?

Let’s say you pass Netflix’s interview and they level you at Senior.

Same as anywhere. You negotiate and no one can force you to work for less then you agree upon.

They make you an offer. You agree to an offer or don’t. That is negotiation. I have on a good authority they may even increase the number offered if there’s a reason to.

I understand they pride themselves to pay at the top of the market and be data driven. They use data to pick the number.

Anyways, you may still opt not to join them if you don’t like the number.

  • Aren’t you scared of Netflix’s “we can fire you anytime because your skill set is outdated but we don’t want to train you” policy?

If you are scared of not having the skills and not eager to learn by yourself, then probably Netflix isn’t a good place to be. Also, the fact that Netflix doesn’t have mentoring doesn’t mean that you can’t attend conferences or workshops or any other event that would help you to enhance your skill set. There isn’t a budget for that, you can spend the money and be free to attend whatever you like, Netflix will reimburse you. It is in the best interest of Netflix that you learn new things and try them out. The only difference is that there isn’t a mentorship program.

+1 I am continually learning and growing. It is on you to know how to equip yourself to do your job and, in my experience, you are given every conceivable resource to do so. If the team isn’t keeping up with advancements in tooling and methods, the company’s future will be diminished.

  • They pay all cash and you buy your own benefits. It's a cool model. Allows everyone to pick what's most important to them.
