Am new to this forum.
I have 14 YOE. From the last 7 years working as TPM (technical project manager) in a mid-size company.
I don’t have aggressive coding exp. However I look after overall customized product delivery for customers from inception to production.
Last 7 years I have been coordinating development , business team and customers. Involved in working with various below mentioned teams to get the final product delivered and support the production.
• If there are any issues with the base product working with the R&D team.
• DBA team
• Performance testing team,
• Network team
• System/Infra for Hardware sizing, Load balance setup
• Troubleshooting production issues, etc
In a nutshell, my role is jack of all master of none. My tc is :154k working in the US SE region.
I want to change and look for better TC. I joined this group a week back, going through some of the posts and realized how much I lost over all these years not knowing many things and living in my own space..
I am sure you all worked very hard, took risks in early stages of your career and sacrificed personal time to have good TC.
that being said. Can you help me to answer some of these questions?
1. Can I fit in/eligible to try any of the FAANG or equivalent companies, which role I am fit into Software engineer or Technical PM, which role has growth.
2. Don’t think I am very good at communication skills. Is it better to move to a developer role?.
3. Do I need to brush up all algorithm skills, if I want to try FAANG or equivalent companies which I studied during my Bachelor degree .
4. Is it worth taking risk at this stage by changing career ( switching to developer), can I compete in the current market.
5. On a side note, what makes you push beyond the boundaries to get highly paid, you are from top schools, ambitions, friends circle? :) :)
Latest tech experience I have is in java, microservices, docker , cloud etc. Not much hands on as I do overlook coordinate and troubleshoot the issues.
If I have to begin interview prep, should I begin going through java, microservices, docker , cloud etc. Or it is a totally different game to attend the FAANG or equivalent companies.
Where is the starting point for interview prep. Just to put a simple way till date I don’t know there is a leetcode folks use for prep.
Appreciate all your suggestions and time for guiding me. Thank you. #software #swe #engineering #help #faang #leetcode #tech #advise

For your questions,
1. Absolutely. It's not that easy to get an interview, but try asking for referrals, even here, and you may get some. You can also start with some lower-tier companies, so after a couple of years of experience you can apply to better companies. PM or SWE - that's up to you. Try solving stuff on Leetcode and see if it's hard and if you enjoy it.
2. You likely need good communication skills for both, so you can start working on this as well. Look up some personal development courses if you want, maybe even Dale Carnegie course.
3. Yes. Not only brush up but also be able to apply them.
4. Never hurts to try. No company will hire you to fail (maybe except Amazon, LOL), so if they hire you - you are good enough for the role and will be able to learn stuff on the job.
FAANG and the likes require Leetcode because they're a lot of people who are applying there. Everyone was doing something useful in their previous job, how to figure out who is the best? Your experience will also be asked about, so don't worry about this.
