I recently joined Google India as L4 role. I have admit for Masters in CS from NYU Courant. Could someone please tell me what are the pros and cons of leaving Google India for Masters?

In the two years it takes to get a Masters degree, you’d have earned eligibility to move to the US on L1 visa through Google. Internal mobility is surprisingly easy here. You also save on the cost that it takes for Masters, plus you’d have a chance at L5. Going for masters would reset that career progression completely.

I’d pick masters only if you’re craving college experience. Don’t expect to learn anything drastically different in Masters.

    My 2 cents.

  • No brainer, stay put.

Experience is far better than Masters. You can educate yourself where ever you are though..

Let me give you another perspective. With Masters you can work in any company. You can get multiple offers and choose the best one. I have seen people get 100k more than what some with L1 is getting for the same position until the person get H1B. Could be 1/2/3 yrs. In that time, someone with OPT/H1B will get 100k-300k more than some one with L1(assuming the TC doesn’t change). Lets take 200k as that amount.
For MS, it takes 60k for the whole program + loss in yearly income.(you can take the summer semester and complete the MS in an year for 30 credit course) after that you can directly join SDE2 instead of SDE1 or starting over as other people are saying. I have many example to show that. Even you can get senior depending on how much you have the right attitude. Also, an extra masters degree helps a lot if you want to be more ambitious with startups and research. I would suggest not thinking short term. You know that most people supposed to stop developing after L5 right. So getting there 1-2 yrs late is fine as compared to one time Masters.

BTW, I am also 4.5 yoe working at some other company and getting double of what you are getting. I am going for the MS.
Only difference between you and me is that you are working at Google which has better internal mobility. Have you seen the intake of sde at google india this year? they almost tripled in numbers. More people, More choices for HM, More competition. Good luck with whatever you choose.
