longtime lurker, hoping the blind community can help me in my dilemma: a couple months ago, I got super lucky and got a bunch of offers including fb, google, and uber 🙏 All were around the same TC and I ended up choosing uber. With lock-up expiration, a large portion of my TC has gone to shit. I estimate my opportunity cost of staying at uber vs. the fb/google offers is now 50-60k/year. No idea if the “offer is valid for 1 year” thing is true for me, but I could reach back out to fb and G to try and salvage my TC. the thing is... I really like my job at Uber. I’m learning and doing totally cool things in a role I’ve never done before, sf commute is easy, and the wlb is great. The roles at G and fb are cool but I’ve done them before, wouldn’t learn as much, and involve a lot of unwanted travel. my mind tells me to think long term and stay at uber; my financial angst (I think about it every morning) tells me to try again for google/fb. do I chase the work or chase the TC? L3 ~168k, much lower now
There’s a lot to be said for you liking your job. It’s very challenging for many folks to land a job you truly enjoy + learning valuable skills. There is a possibility you jump ship and don’t like the role/team as much, especially with the unwanted travel. Stick it out for a bit longer and reevaluate how you feel again in a few months, since you have some time before the 1 year is up. If months down the line you’re still waking up every morning with TC regrets, maybe you reach back out to your G/FB recruiters and reconsider then.

The Uber cash crunch is just beginning and it may get worse if Waymo, Cruise, or Tesla succeed. People talk about rapid career advancement at Uber but that won’t happen anymore if the $ aren’t there to make it happen. Perhaps you can speak with the recruiters at the companies that you declined to see if the door remains open
That’s one of the things that concerns me... seeing cost cuts and constraints everywhere...
Take a long term view on your Uber stock compensation. If you believe in the company and the stock your rsu grant will recover and you might get refreshers at the lows.

Always look for good work and good TC will follow you. Maybe after learning new skills, you can go to G at better level. Everything happens for a reason!
