Next career direction

I started off as a machine learning engineer six years ago. But after three years I realized working under machine learning managers that I'm not implementing anything cool in machine learning, and I'm not improving as a software engineer, because most machine learning PhD managers at places I've worked didn't really pay attention to writing good code.

I switched to working on writing crud applications and data pipelines with a little bit of machine learning code here and there. Nothing fancy, but as a result I've become a much better python and Java programmer. I also do side projects on Android and JavaScript/Django.

I feel out of touch with machine learning, though I've taken some deep learning courses. I'm mainly interested in a path that will lead me to being a CTO, and I'm not tied to having to work on machine learning.

I've used several machine learning libraries, and Hadoop and spark and Kafka, but I don't feel all that confident about my skills in them.

I have decent domain knowledge in building and maintaining ecommerce catalogs, but i don't know how to leverage that knowledge as such.

What kind of a career move should I be looking to make? What skills should I focus on acquiring?
