understanding PM nomenclature in Amazon

Dec 8, 2016 12 Comments

can the folks from Amazon validate my understanding of the different PM roles and comps?
1. PM, product manager: owns the product end to
2. TPM, technical program manager: tech implementation, understands code/architecture
3. PgM, program manager: this is pure project & release management

of the three, for the same level, who is highest paid?

I puked - I think we should just have software engineers - all other roles should be abolished

There's a fourth - PMT (PM Technical) for instance a PM in Alexa or AWS. These roles I believe are the most highly compensated. I don't have exact info though.

    • can you give an example? aren't all products technical? take Kindle v1 launch as an example. the PM would conceptualize, make deals with publishing houses, work with marketing and ops to ship the product. the TPMs would actually figure out the paper ink display, buying books, downloading books etc. the PgM manages the Gantt charts and releases. what did a PMT do here?

Zfjb is close, as are you, but not right.

    PM Program manager

    TPM Technical Program Manager

    PdM/PM(sometimes) Product Manager

And the newer Technical Product Manager (still mostly just called a PdM.

Only orgs with zero program managers call product managers PM

I'd be surprise if the answer is not PM. But of course it also depends on perf.
