Just interviewed at Nordstrom. I'm an 19 months SDE1 at Amazon. How's the culture ? How's the compensation like? Any info about the company is appreciated. Thanks.
You should some stocks vested in the next few months...hold on till then atleast
Are you done with tech at sde 1? Might not be so easy coming back from non-tech companies to tech companies.
Nordy's is in the fight of their lives. Bunch of ex-AMZN folks there trying to make it work. Some really smart folks after the house cleaning they did a few years ago. They are trying to take it private so that they can invest heavily in tech over the next few years. Rumor has it the Nordstrom of the future will be more of a "lifestyle experience," and less about retail browsing. Do you have a passion for fashion, and do you want to go to war? If not, stay at AMZN...or maybe head over to Disney or Heptio or something.
I second this. The majority of people who gravitate towards Nordstrom are primarily concerned more with appearances and gossip than real innovation and building, even at the corporate level. They used to be Seattle’s pride retailer many years ago, but took a turn for the worse. I worked there several years ago when I was desperate and naive and quickly saw that the toxic culture wasn’t worth it. Plus, the POS computers were gray Stone Age blocks as late as 2012. My entire time working there I couldn’t believe that with so many customers who dropped thousands in a single spree, they couldn’t afford a few dozen new computers in their Seattle Flagship store??? As previously mentioned, the Nordstrom brothers are trying to take it private again, but struggling to get the funding. They likely realized a little too late the slippery slope their namesake company was going down..
Compensation is lower than the average for Tech in Seattle. There is no real sense of urgency, or drive to get things done. A lot of “hand waving” and not a lot of accountability. If you are driven to deliver; Nordstrom can be a frustrating place to be.

Dynamic programming - bottom up now mandatory?
I've heard they're technologically incompetent to some degree, but that's just anecdotal. It could be a huge opportunity to influence them though. Why not stay to SDE 2 at Amazon?
Some teams at Amazon can be technologically incompetent too
