Acknowledgement: Amazon raised the bar for employee well being

This post is an acknowledgement to Amazon’s handling of #covid19 #covid second wave crisis that hit India in Mar/Apr this year. They went above and beyond to ensure employee well being. For folks who don’t have the entire context, India faced a massive second wave due to delta variant in Mar/Apr/May this year. The death fatalities were record high and anecdotally there most people had a acquaintance/relative who died due to covid. The health infrastructure wasn’t prepared to handle this unexpected surge and there was shortage of oxygen and essential medical facilities. During this time Amazon launched multiple efforts to help its employees. They converted hotel rooms to covid recovery Centre for employees, provide advance salary for multiple months, provided dedicated concierge helpline who would help you find beds, icu etc., provided access to on ground volunteers helping people procure oxygen and much more… Usually Amazon is not comparable to it’s peers in terms of employee benefits(no free lunch, no Christmas gifts) but in this instance, when support was needed the most, it stepped up and truly went beyond to take care of employees. Other peers like Google didn’t have any support (they just had an internal wiki to help employees find correct insurance for themselves and their families) for their employees facing Covid crisis in India.

Amazon is setting a very high bar for employee well-being. Any employee that does not meet the bar will be PIP'ed

Amazon shshsbs Jun 27, 2021

lonely d i c k as well?

Google NeverRTO Jun 27, 2021

I heard they also implemented "No PIP Fridays" where anyone who was going to receive a PIP would be spared until the following Monday (or Tuesday, if Monday was a holiday)

Amazon's covid helpline worked wonders. Getting oxygen within 2 hours of a request in towns is no joke. Vaccination drive has been held in approximately 15 cities till now.

No. That will be too unrealistic to expect and even if implemented would be a sham just like some companies canceling mid year calibration even though you will still get evaluated on full year performance at the end of year is a sham. We live in a capitalist society buddy and utopia doesn’t exist!

For my org, all deadlines and deliverables to India teams were relaxed by a few weeks. Reports evaluating teams for org wide goals omitted India teams to accommodate for COVID.

Agree with Op. Amazon went above and beyond in this instance of Covid, with all the facilities mentioned by Op. My org has been providing Friday off in every 2 weeks since April when wave 2 started.

Lol thank you for the laugh, it was greatly needed. They sure didn't do shit for me then tried to sweep. Under rug when it wasn't reported properly
