Google vs Microsoft

Apr 25 24 Comments

Hi Everyone,

This my first time posting on Blind. Looking for your input.

I currently have a verbal offer from Google, Canada (L6 - Tech, non-SWE) and have final interview for Microsoft with the HM’s manager post the onsite (this round is basically when you clear the onsite - as told by the recruiter, who also mentioned that they are keen to move forward with an offer).

Would it be ok to negotiate with Google if I receive a higher offer from Microsoft, I have already negotiated the Google offer by 20% without any counter. I haven’t signed the Google offer yet but have accepted it verbally on call with the recruiter.

Would Microsoft pay TC higher than what Google has offered? ( I am not aware of the level but it is for Senior Architect (not professional services))?

YoE: 8
Current TC: C$140K
Google verbal offer TC: C$400K

Google is vastly superior to Microsoft by almost any metric. I doubt the Microsoft tc will be close. Let alone prestige / quality of peers etc

Congrats on the offer! A few years ago, Microsoft offered me a sr L64 role, while Google offered a down leveled IC3. Google wouldn’t match the Microsoft offer, so I took Microsoft because it was more money and a better title. I figured I could always reinterview with google in the future. My experience looks like it’s not the norm. Good luck!

Welcome and congrats on the offers!

It’s slightly negative to negotiate after already negotiating but the power is all in your hands until you sign. Mention that things changed and you’re really torn between both but would sign with google if they matched x.

I would join G over MSFT by a landslide personally but it’s ultimately up to you. I heard M doesn’t do refreshers and so after 4 years your comp drops off dramatically. Someone from there should confirm though.

Thanks @yordl3. I did have the same thought and I am on the edge with the renegotiation as it feels to be unethical and not right to an extent, but thanks again for your advice it does help clear some thoughts I have :)

It is for tech role, it is for Canada though. Not sure if that makes any difference but I am happy to get that number :). Maybe I will have a better luck when I try next time.

Apologies I currently cannot give specifics of the role as it is specific to a team which is not that huge in Google and I still haven’t signed the offer. I am just trying to be cautious hope you understand. I have had a Shopify offer rescind before and I am just trying to be extra cautious this time.

@Meta asked this question for your own good, OP.

We don’t know what role it is, so 400k TC for tech role seems a hard lowball. SWEa make 600k-ish for L6 at Google. So unless you share the exact role, people can’t evaluate.

Thanks Google I am apologetic to Meta. Again I didnt mean to be rude and I do understand the question was in my best interest. I am not in the SWE role. I wasn’t looking to reevaluate the number that I got. I am aware of the numbers lot of other folks at similar level have - I didnt have a competing offer to get to that number plus I am comparing Canada vs US. US the salary ranges are way different than what I can get here
