Just started as a Demand Gen Manager at a mid-market tech company. Dragged my feet for a few years working for small businesses and regret not moving into tech sooner.

I just landed my first six figure salary. I am happy where I’m at but want to continue to rise.

Tips for getting to 200k+ in 5 years? Do I need to be job hopping every 1.5 years?

PMM's in some companies with 6+ YOE are already making $200k TC.

Source: Interviewed with many such companies and 200k is falls well within their band.

paypal: In bay area you can easily get 200k TC with decent exp. But interviewing is a pain in the backside.

Other locations base pay is around 160k with 6+YOE

(Not at HP anymore) I'm in Growth with 7 YOE, around 220k TC. Find a specialty skill and stick with it. If you can learn SQL it'll get you a long way. Gauge the market, and switch jobs when you hit a plateau.

  • Take it from someone who has done it, strategic job hopping is probably the best way to get where you’re trying to go. Companies rarely proactively keep your pay on par with the current market.

You don’t need to necessarily change job jobs every year, but I would at least test the market every year to see where offers come in at and decide whether it’s worth switching or leveraging it for more money where you’re at.

Work hard, establish yourself as an expert in Demand Gen and make strategic moves to companies where you can get raises to keep moving up the ladder.

If you find the right company, you may have your salary adjusted to help you get the comp you want -- don't just jump because you're bored / impatient.

Do it the right way and you'll be fine.
