Roles Comparison

Jan 23 16 Comments

Hi everyone,

I am a recent grad and got offers for two different positions. One is at ServiceNow as a Full Stack Developer to build digital workflows, primarily working in Javascript, Angular, Groovy (Java), and SQL. The other position is as a Cloud Engineer at JPMC, where you will handle infrastructure as code and build self-healing and resiliency patterns across private and public cloud platforms using Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, Cassandra, and Kafka.

TC for both the positions:
ServiceNow: 190k (Santa Clara, CA)
JPMC: 135k (Jersey City, NJ)

I am just trying to get your opinions about each position in terms of career growth and flexibility in branching out to other roles. Any advice would be much appreciated.

No offense, but this looks fake to me. I am pretty sure new grad offers don’t come with 15% bonus. I am sure people are thinking the same thing.

    • Sure, I would also find it fake only if I don't have the offer. However, this might be helpful to justify these numbers, I graduated with a Masters and had a couple of FAANG internships in the process.

  • These are two different domains you are looking at. I think the focus should be what really interests you in the long run. You are looking at an SDE position VS SRE position. Since you are a new grad, the TC doesn’t matter too much. You are going to make a switch 2-3 years down the lane anyway.

    • Thanks for your comment. I agree with you about comparing apples with oranges. I can't really decide now, what would be better in the long run as I don't have decent years of experience in SRE. From the looks of it, SRE at JPMC seems to be more challenging and fun.

    • I am an SRE. If you are an extrovert and enjoy talking to teams and people, this is the role for you. Also, your hours might vary from 9-5. You are not stuck with a framework or a programming language here and are in demand with booming companies. Having said that, an SDE role comes with its own perks where you can work as per your schedule. I started as an SDE and have now moved completely into SRE. I don’t write code all day long , I enjoy what I do and have a wholistic picture of how the technology works.

  • Why don’t you start a poll? Have 3 options, with one other. I vote servicenow because saas is a growing industry but I’m not technical
