FB return vs Airbnb vs LinkedIn Relevance internship

Nov 8, 2018 23 Comments

Curious as to what y’all think might be the best option here. For context, I’ve previously done ML projects at two Big 4 companies (FB is one of them) and I’m evaluating offers. Primarily interested in machine learning opportunities.

LinkedIn pros:
Guaranteed project / team I’m interested in (interviewed for ml role)
SF office
Cons:
No flexibility on team
Product not as interesting or cutting edge (to me)

Airbnb pros:
Cool culture, good eng, cool product
Definitely interesting and diverse ml work going on
Cons:
ML project not guaranteed (altho I think prior experience would help here)

Fb for me probably is my least favorite option. I think it’s a good idea to intern at different places and get new experiences.

  • If relevance is what you want to work on, then LinkedIn might be a good option. You aren't garaunteed a ml position at Airbnb like you said and I know very few interns get to work on it per year.

This is true. That said, it could also be that fewer interns have experience in the field relative to something like traditional back end or front end, and are more hesitant to join a project like that. I could be wrong though.

    • I don't have solid numbers but I think a lot of people are interested in ML. That said, it is definitely not the case that a lot of people have background in it, and Airbnb probably considers that.

If you want to work on interesting ML projects don’t consider Airbnb. The people who know ML suffer because at the leadership level nobody cares about ML n most of PMs have 0 technical knowledge or experience. I’m leaving Airbnb n I’m an experience ML eng with 15 yoe. When I joined Airbnb I had offers from FB and Google and few other places and I joined because of the culture too. But I regret my decision very much. Also count how many ML scientists or respected ML people are at Airbnb. ML at Airbnb is a joke currently n it takes minimum a year till they really fix it.

  • Don’t chase the girl you don’t like. You will end up with regrets anyway.

I don’t hate LinkedIn by any means. If I was working on something irrelevant at Airbnb, then LinkedIn would probably be a better option.
