Opinions: which path should I choose?

Looking for advice, I recently resigned from my job, started my own LLC, a consulting company. I have few connections who want me to do short term consulting gigs, I want to try this and see if I can be successful. In the meantime I am getting calls for full time interviews. Should I interview? Or should I just focus on my consulting gig?

Anyone who has done consulting — were you picky about the type of projects you took up initially to build your reputation? How long did it take for you to make similar money as a full time job?

I’d find a way to use the interview(s) as an advertisement for your consulting company. Had a few gigs come from being responsive but resistant to FT inquiries. Stripe being a more recent one.

Tbh…Most are picky when they can afford to be. Everything is experience, the driest briefs can and do tend to be the most fun. I tend to do research on the people, remember the good ones and find ways to work with them again (because as is on this app, most look to move every couple of years and that’s a natural way to build up a desirable roster of portfolio clients if you’re after that kind of thing).

As for comp it can ramp up pretty quickly, especially if you can recruit, scale up teams, strategy, process and/or negotiate budget allocation behind a project in addition to UX work. If you can take the whole problem space from start to end and deliver, you’ll be golden.

For some it can be unnerving, to be that close to the volatility of generating new business. Which can create a toll on maintaining a healthy runway for yourself and a healthy WLB…but it is manageable. It’s not necessarily feast or famine, it’s about having more financial literacy.

If however, it does go well it can make for new interesting problems…TC for FT tech gigs are capped (even arbitrarily) and you might find you can outpace ‘promotions’ in 6 monthly cycles, makes returning a little more difficult.

Depends on your financial situation and goals, mostly.

Depends on the type of consulting you do. The first time I did that I made more than my corporate salary in 3 months. 10 years later I did a different type of consulting but didn't work out too well so I went back to a company.
