Quit and upskill for the next job

Feb 8, 2021 13 Comments

Hi,
Considering a constructive feedback from blind fam.

I currently work for cognizant india. I was trained in mainframe and put into a project related to it.
I don't feel motivated enough and not sure if I will have a future in IT working in mainframe. So I am considering quitting my current job and upskill in a newer tech stack (preference is Front end developer).

Questions are:
1) Will career gap of six months will have any impact in future?
2) Is quitting job to upskill fine?
3)Is starting as a front end developer good?

P.S: I currently I have Zero offers. I don't find time to learn as my job demands 12-13 hrs of effort hence contemplating quitting job.

Designation: Programmer Analyst
Yoe: 1.6 yrs

  • First identify which technology you like to work on, asking to people on any platform will not help you. invest some time on every technology you think you liked and choose one or two after working on those.

Make sure you have 100% dedicatation for preparation so you'll not waste those 6 months. I've idea about congizant (service based) culture in india, most of the people live in their comfort zone or inshort lazy to try something else. Get our of that zone before you resign. ( Not generalizing this but this is what i experienced )

Otherwise, don't think 6 months or year of gap will be an issue for any organisation.

What is PA? And I don't think gap of 6 months will be a red flag especially in your early career

Gap in your resume shouldn't matter much to FANG and top company. They only care for good interview.

Smaller companies many be more picky about gaps

My advice will be not to take a break at all. Talent pool in india is so deep that it can hurt you later. Since you are working for cognizant, work 4 hrs on project and 6 hrs on prepping for a new technology. Aim for a certification in niche area which has higher billing if your idea is to do a technology switch within the company as body shop companies just care about billing. Find a project manager who handle this technology and switch project once the position opens up. If you are looking to get into core design development related technologies, then get certified on those as well as do side projects. Best of luck

  • Learn and practice side project and change your resume on that.. start give interview for less experience it should work.. don't restrict yourself.. just give a try.. accept even if it's a same package
