When applying for an Android or iOS SWE role, do I need to have relevant professional experience with either technology? I’m an experienced back-end engineer that writes mostly Java these days. I can get up to speed very quickly with a new stack. #career #tech

  • Yes. Even mobile interviews at fang are a mix of leetcode and relevant questions.

Thanks! Are the mobile specific questions typically asked during the system design round instead of the coding round? Do you happen to know of any resources to get up to speed on mobile dev very quickly?

    • System design definitely. And half of the coding for F/G. Udacity has some good tutorials. However, if u don’t have experience it’s likely u will end up getting a L3. The best way is to get into a general role then do an internal transfer.

When companies look to hire for specific roles that require iOS or Android experience you would need to demonstrate some hands on experience. Many interview loops include writing some mobile app features. But some large companies where you shop for teams after getting hired you can interview in the track you are strong then try to switch.
