Google NYC Office - Where to Live?

Feb 3 18 Comments

For those of you working at Google NYC, where do you live/where do you recommend living for roughly 3.2k/month for 1 bedroom?

Would you also recommend looking further out since Google NYC is not RTO yet?

West village is fun and close enough to the office. Chelsea feels dead even though it's even closer

Leaning towards Jersey City, Chelsea seems to expensive at the moment for similar rooms, any pros and cons to Jersey City?

Not thinking of buying yet, will decide that in a year or so when hopefully the market cools down. It will come down to a 1.5 million home with a backyard in historic downtown JC vs same home, perhaps bigger in suburban NJ/NY at 500k or so.

Speaking for the Hudson county area, the way I see it is - if you're going to pay manhattan rents in JC - either in the Journal Sq or Grove St. area, might as well consider harrison or newark as close to the PATH as possible.
Newport / exch pl. gives you high rents but none of the benefits.

You could just buy a two famliy home and cover all your costs for 4k and get parking while you're at it.

Did research on this for months. Ended up in east village. It’s the best area and it’s not even close

I’d recommend looking a bit north as well (UWS, West Harlem). I live off the 125th St ACBD stop and can get to Google in < 20 minutes. $2375 for a fully renovated 2 bed 1 bath with in unit W/D

I lived in the east village for 3 years and had an amazing time, minus the whole lockdown. But even that wasn't bad since there were so many top tier takeout spots around the block. Just try to avoid living right above a bar, and consider having an apt that faces away from the street so there's less noise.

I'm in a very nice quiet building in Park Slope and even though the apt is 10x nicer and more comfortable I kinda miss the action of East Village. Just go there, get the best apt that fits your budget and if you hate it you can just move.

About much rent did you pay? Many people who move to Manhattan from outside are used to in-unit laundry, elevator if needed, central AC, and bright/new apartments for less than half the price and taxes. I'm talking Seattle or parts of Jersey. So when they see they are going to lose all this for more than double the rent and increased taxes, plus deal with claustrophobic apartments with possibility of cockroaches (according to OpenIgloo reviews), they prefer living in Jersey instead. And I didn't even mention the broker fee and broker dominated rental market yet, an NYC exclusive concept.

Amazon's Jersey slack channel is full of people saying "giving up on my housing hunt in NYC, what are my options in Jersey" lol.

I paid 2400 but rents are higher now. I took my laundry to a wash and fold. So, in the morning I'd drop off my clothes and on my way home I'd pick up my cleaned, folded laundry.

I did genuinely miss having a dishwasher but it isn't so bad if you do takeout a lot. I'd pick a dishwasher over a laundry setup every time.
