Contract Roles - Good or Bad?

Jan 7 13 Comments

I accepted a contract role with Microsoft to gain experience, have the name on my resume and to break into the tech world. Thinking about future prospects was this a good or bad move? Does it anyway reflect poorly? (Not caring about how it looks to FT workers more so recruiters and HMs)

FTEs are going to weigh in angrily, but here’s my experience. I’m a vendor at google. On my resume, I listed “Google via Accenture” (I don’t actually work for Accenture) and I’ve gotten quite a positive response to companies I apply to. I am quite clear that I’m a vendor, not an FTE, and am simply a consultant delivering services. The recruiters contact me and say “What have you been doing at google?” Then in interviews, I answer questions with “While I’ve been at Google….”

Despite being 100% honest in my relationship with google, I’m self conscious about the fact that I’m just a vendor, but other companies seem to see what they want to believe. So it works out. Do I get all of the clout of working for google without the high bar? Fuck no. I’m a vendor.

Google doesn’t treat me like a second class citizen. Maybe I’m unique. I do think it’s better to have google contract on your resume than <no name tiny tech company nobody has heard of>

Ah thanks both for clarifying. And yeah, as a Google manager of TVCs, I treat my team as fellow human beings. I'm super happy for them when they either convert to FTE, or leverage their contracting experience to get good positions at other companies

I have friends who worked as contractors with Apple and Facebook. Their teams treated them very well, they got to work on interesting projects. Eventually they moved on to similar companies and were/are happy with their careers.

Grab the opportunity if you feel that's the best option for you. All the best 👍

People may often remind you that you are contractor.

The staffing agency might treat you like a third class citizen. If you have any questions, your client says ask your employer.

Basically, you need have a open mindset that you don’t belong any where and complete the work assigned to you. You may not get credit unless your client manager is good.

I think it'll be just fine. What you did and what you can do is just as important, probably more, than what company you worked for or whatever, especially early in your career.

Early career? Maybe I could agree. I’m a vendor at google. Once you have a few years of experience, the company name is all that matters.

You can make more than FTEs. Lots of paperwork and regulatory requirements but...
