Very few posts about Staten Island, NY on Blind. It looks like a nice area. Prices are not as high as in Brooklyn. SI has the lowest crime rate in NY. There are a few beautiful neighborhoods out there. Express bus takes you to the city within 25 mins (however Im staying WFH and not returning to the office anytime soon). You can own a house there and real estate appreciates way faster than NJ - 10% avg per year.

What do you think?

  • Staten Island seriously sucks, it has the reputation it has for good reason.

    • To put it as simply as possible, SI is filled with a bunch of douche bags. Not saying everyone from there is a douche, but they probably have the highest rate of douches per capita in the nation.

Got it. Thanks for the input. I dived a bit deeper into demographics and noticed that SI is predominantly white, which is a plus in my books. After living for almost 10 years in Manhattan/Brooklyn as immigrant, I gave up on forcing myself to like diversity. I feel that I always try to be a fake person saying that I like someone’s culture food or how they behave, etc. I just can’t deal with that crap anymore. I’m much more peaceful deep inside interacting with people of my own kind. I know it sounds cringy, but I can’t change my brain wires.

The thing that concerns me more about SI is the radiation cleanup project. I don’t know. F**k that place.

  • Some nice areas, some not so nice ones. I have some family there, and although the neighborhood is ok, the people living in that neighborhood are kind of special in a way that I could not have dealt with. A lot of traffic if you're thinking about the commute.

    • Very blue collar culture in much of SI, for lack of a better way to put it. Everyone in my family's neighborhood either wants to be a baseball player, sanitation worker, or a fireman. NJ had lots of people commuting into Manhattan, but SI almost seemed to look down on the people working in the rest of the city as being too educated, too elite. The values were a mismatch for me.

  • Staten Island is the worst of both worlds. Its residents have Trumpy grievances about how their country is being ruined by the the immigrants, the gays, the educated, and the atheists. Despite being predominantly white and well off they have a victim mentality that makes them do stupid things like not get vaccinated to stick it to the libs. At the same time they are full on New York assholes who think they’re more important than you and are rude, aggressive, and pushy. Plus you have to pay NYC taxes and prices for boring suburbia.

Well, I don’t blame those people. They might have a reason for their beliefs. After all being predominately white place the crime rate their is the lowest in NY. Cringy? Yes. Reality? Yes.

I don’t get the jokes because I don’t know the _why_ they are making fun of SI. My wife’s friends live there and they like it a lot. That’s all I know.
