Recently I encountered a recruiter that insisted to get a salary expectation. I kept on telling her “competitive market rate” she asked for a range to be precise on what competitive market rate means. I sent her levels.fyi. I renegotiated their offer twice and got higher than levels.fyi avrg for that position.

  • One of the recruiters I worked with used levels to check my then-current TC. Needless to say, this made a bad impression, he tried to low-ball me using that data. Afrer negotiation their offer went 2x from the initial AND I declined it to join another company that made reasonable offer from the beginning (I still negotiated)

large companies invest millions of dollars in software that only does salary barring.

It takes in account the location, candidate experience, market rate and knowledge needed to do a role then creates a range. Yes, the recruiters decide where you are on that range when they send the offer but it’s a verifiable process.

  • They more than likely have internal data sets as well
