I am planning to buy my first car. A few days back I talked with a Toyota dealer. I think he felt that I am naive and he quoted a high price. I am planning on talking to more dealers. I want to improve my negotiation skills, show that I am knowledgeable and land a good deal. Please let me know if there are resources that would help me.

There isn’t much inventory of new cars or even used cars. Almost all dealers are charging markups over msrp (some as high as 10k). The ones that are selling at msrp (no markups) have long waitlists.

Good luck with your car search, but not sure how much negotiating leverage you might have.

    • I agree. If there is a possibility to defer your purchase till next year, until this supply shortage is over and less people are buying cars due to higher interest rates, you’ll be in a better position. I really don’t think this is a buyer’s market.

Try to talk to more dealers and get more quotes then let them compete with each other. It worked for me before the chips shortage hits car market last year but not sure if it will work again

This is the way. You don’t even need to physically go, just email them, have them bid against each other. Make sure the offer includes other random fees etc for out the door price. Once you decide on the final deal, print the email and take it with you, so they can’t play tricks. Save yourself time and multiple trips.
